DESCRIPTION:
The PLS PS11/FS11 temperature sensor & transmitter flex assembly brings a new concept in 4-20 mA temperature measurement systems to temperature probe manufacturers. A rugged solid state temperature sensor and a programmable 4-20mA transmitter are manufactured on the same flexible circuit substrate and connected together by flex that is about 11 inches long. The sensor is ready to be inserted and sealed into a sensor tube. The 4-20mA transmitter fits into a PLS DB1 DIN Form B compliant "hockey puck" case or a PLS MC1 Minicase as shown in the DB1 or MC1 datasheets. A reliable, quick-connect spring-force terminal block is used for the 4-20mA current loop connections. The current loop connections are not polarized so the wires can be connected either way to the terminal block. The sensor temperature range of the PS11 can be programmed by the user in the field using a PC with the PLS PROG1 programmer interface. The temperature range of the fixed range FS11 is set at the factory during test and is not field programmable.
Low cost manufacturing of the assembly is achieved by using fully automated surface mounted sensor and transmitter components. Manufacturing cost is further reduced by making and testing multiple assemblies together on one flex panel, and by interleaving two flex assemblies, "L" and "S", to minimize the width of the panel. Due to the interleaving, the "L" assembly is about an inch longer overall than the "S" assembly, but both are intended to be used interchangeably.
Because the sensor and programmable transmitter are made on the same flex substrate, they are a "matched set" which significantly improves the temperature measurement accuracy. Both the sensor and the programmable transmitter are calibrated over their full operating temperature ranges at test, which provides full system accuracy that is significantly better than the IEC 751 Class A accuracy. These PLS design, manufacturing and test innovations result in both Very Low Cost and Very High Accuracy, providing probe manufacturers with new solutions for temperature sensors with 4-20mA transmitters.
