DESCRIPTION:

The PLS PC Programmer includes everything needed to allow the user to program the PLS Programmable Temperature Sensor/Transmitter Systems in the field with a PC.

The software is a Windows program that operates on Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 computers.

The program provides an easy-to-use intuitive user interface that allows the user to read and re-program the temperature range settings in the transmitter.

It also displays the transmitter's serial number, the date it was last programmed, the number of times it has been programmed, and the calibration data stored in the transmitter's nonvolatile E2 memory.

The program also allows the user to add a custom line of text and save it the E2 for future reference.

The Programmer comes with a USB cable to connect to the PC. An interface cable plugs into the programmer at one end and the transmitter at the other end and can be easily replaced if needed.

INSTALLING THE PROGRAM IN A PC:

The CD includes the Windows program, a setup.exe file, and a readme text file with more detailed instructions for installing the programmer. The software is a Windows C++ program developed using MS Visual Studio 2010 which operates on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 computers. Your computer will need access to the web to download drivers from Microsoft. Follow the steps below to install the program:

  1. Insert the CD and open the readme file in any text reader such as notepad or word.

  2. Before starting the install, read this data sheet or the readme file so you know what to expect.

  3. If the CD doesn't start the installation automatically, double click the setup.exe file.

  4. Review and approve the End User License Agreement and the file location and the install will begin.

  5. The install program will look for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 to support the C++ Windows program.

  6. This may already be present if you have other C++ programs on your computer, otherwise it will need to access Microsoft website to download it. This may take some time – 10 to 15 minutes for XP and as much as 30 minutes for VISTA, including a re-boot of the computer.

  7. Once .NET is loaded, the rest of the programmer software will be installed and an icon will appear on your desktop to start the programmer.

  8. Plug the USB cable into your computer and the programmer box.

  9. The computer will look for the appropriate drivers for the programmer interface and download them from the web if needed. If you already have other USB – serial adapters on your system, this step may not be needed. If drivers are needed, be patient – it may take up to 30 minutes for XP and more than an hour for VISTA to find them and download them onto your system.

  10. After the drivers are loaded in, the program is ready to use.

HOW TO USE THE PROGRAMMER:

  1. Click the Programmer icon on the desktop to start the program and display the programming screen.

  2. Connect the USB cable to the programmer and the computer.

  3. Plug the interface cable into the programmer and into the part to be programmed.

  4. To view the information stored in the transmitter, click the “DISPLAY SENSOR INFORMATION” checkbox and then click the “START” button.

  5. The screen will display the part number, a custom line of text, Serial Number, Minimum and Maximum Temperature settings, the number of times programmed and detailed Sensor and Transmitter Calibration Data.

  6. To change the Transmitter temperature settings, click the “PROGRAM TEMPERATURE RANGE” checkbox, click either the C or F Unit box, enter the desired Minimum (4mA) and Maximum (20mA) Temperatures, and then click START.

  7. To change the part number in line 1 and/or add another line of text up to 16 characters long in line 2, check the “ADD TEXT” check box and enter the desired text into line 1 or line 2. This text will be saved in E2 in the transmitter for future reference.

  8. The program will read the calibration data in the transmitter, display the new settings and serial number on the screen and then indicate it is ready to program the unit.

  9. Click the “OK” button to program the new settings into the E2 in the transmitter.

  10. When done, the screen will display the coefficients programmed into the transmitter for the new temperature settings and indicate that the programming was successful.

  11. A copy of the new settings is saved in a log file in the computer for future reference and a “PROGRAMMING DONE” message is displayed.

  12. If you want to program another part simply unplug the current part, plug in the new part and hit start (or enter). The program will repeat steps 7 – 11 on the new part.
